Rick Daniels

Richard J. “Rick” Daniels has started, run or served as a senior advisor to many well-known media brands ranging from traditional media organizations such as The Boston Globe, The Hartford Courant and the Baltimore Sun to digital start-ups, relaunches and early-stage ventures, including brands such as Seamans Media, Boston.com and WickedLocal.com. Rick’s work with Seamans Media began as an advisor in mid-2017 and shortly after he joined the company as Chief Operating Officer to help founder Eric Seamans and his team to strengthen and operate a set of distinguished sports media brands whose purpose is to publish highly sought out journalism across multiple media platforms that focuses on dedicated athletes and their supporters in select sports.

Rick has been involved in several significant purchases, sales or start-ups in the media and communications industry. As head of the company’s planning and development efforts, Rick played a central role in guiding and consummating the sale of Affiliated Publications (then the publicly-traded parent company of The Boston Globe) to the New York Times Company for just over $1Billion – still the highest-ever price for a single newspaper. For the next 13 years after the sale, The New York Times company asked Rick to lead several launches and to take several key operating roles that added significant capabilities, revenues and audiences to the company, especially in digital media. Among those were the launches of boston.com, Globe Direct, and Boston Globe Media. Rick served as President and General Manager of the Boston Globe for 5 years taking on full P+L responsibility for a > $500Million in annual revenues business. Later, Rick took on operating or restructuring roles for Gannett’s (then GateHouse Media’s) New England properties and served as publisher for Tribune Publishing’s Hartford Courant and the Baltimore Sun. These experiences are examples of the breadth and depth of media and new venture experience Rick has brought to Seamans Media. 

Rick has focused his volunteer activities for many years on the many levels of education delivery and currently serves as a Commissioner of the New England Commission for Higher Education, which accredits virtually all the higher education institutions throughout New England to enable them to participate in federal funding programs as well enjoy the benefits of having an internationally-recognized accreditor. Rick was born and brought up in the City of Boston, graduated from The Boston Latin School, and has an undergraduate degree from Northeastern University and a graduate degree from Boston University.
